GNOWANGERUP SOCCER CLUB

Information shared by Stephen Bowes:
The West Australian 25/11/1933 indicates that the Gnowangerup Soccer Club was formed in 1912. The club appears to have passed into recess, possibly due to the Great War, to be reformed following a meeting at Fred Lee's fruit and veg store on 9/5/1920.
Gnowangerup United played their first match against Salt River, followed by four matches against Ongerup Town. In 1921, Ongerup won the league on goal difference from Borden, with Gnowangerup third in a three team league.

1921
In 1921 Ongerup played Gnowangerup for the "Gnowangerup Hospital Cup" as part of the team's fundraising efforts. Medals were awarded to each player. A collection was also taken during the game, with all proceeds going to the hospital.Ongerup won the league on goal difference from Borden, with Gnowangerup third in a three team league. Gnowangerup Team Members included:
John Stewart (Captain), Tommy Stewart, Grocock, Nestor, Lee Boadman, Stirling, R. J. Nestor, Jack Rogers, Parker, T. Watts & Finninley. Gnowangerup "United" won 4 goals to Two. The Referee was Mr. Winkett.

On the local ground on Sunday 18th May Gnowangerup and Borden teams met, the result being a draw, 2 goals each. Spectators and supporters were plentiful, and both teams were evenly matched. Thanks is due to the ladies who prepared tea, and the Club would be pleased to have help from others who can come along. Preparations are now b ing madefor the dance on June 14th.

1930
A match was played on Sunday 4th May 1930 at Tambellup between Gnowangerup and Tambellup with the honours going to the visiting team. The home team played a very good losing game, which went to prove that there was no lack of sportsmanship whatever in their community. The three prominent were Sponner (right half), the ful back, and the goal keeper. Had the centre forward got at least a little support from either wing, I doubt whether the strangers would have had the honours of three goals to nil. The selection committee for Gnowangerup can for once take the credit due to them for having placed the players right, especially in the case of Frank Jessup (full back). Had Maley played his usual game, he too would have had a great chance, but he will hang on to the ball and dribbling does not happen to be his long suit. Morley proved their best player and in every case came off victor. It is a pity that a few more won't adopt his tactics and feed the centre forward, Watson, who never fails to make use of his position. The referee lost his temper on two occasions, which should never happen in his position.
The position in pionts of the teams are - Borden, 4 points; Gnowangerup, 4 points; Ongerup, 2 points; Tambellup, nil.
